Welcome to Disciple Science

We have big plans   for   addressing the tension and controversies between science and faith and inspiring Christians to engage with the sciences and  helping people meet God through the wonders of creation.    Our videos below will  give you a taste of what is to come.

Disciple Science Videos

Is Stewardship Enough?
There is near universal agreement that God calls humans to care for the creation. Oddly, there is much less agreement about exactly how our role, often labeled stewards of creation, should work. This video explores the topics of Biblical dominion, stewardship and the shortcomings of both of those approaches to our relationship with God's creation.
What the Galileo affair can teach us about the origins debate?
The Galileo affair is often portrayed as a science vs. faith scenario where a narrow minded Catholic church punished an innovative scientist for trusting his data. However, the true story is much more complex and reveals lessons on wisdom that apply to every opportunity to defend your beliefs.
What is Disciple Science?
Christian faith gives us meaning and purpose and a pathway to a relationship with God. Science is a tool that we can use to better understand God's creation. Science and faith are compatible and complementary but society often treats them as alternative explanations of the world. Disciple Science is a crowdfunded non-profit making media to show how integrating science and Christian faith can inspire a fuller knowledge of God.
Thomas Kuhn, scientific revolutions and Biblical interpretation
Science is always changing but the Biblical canon is fixed. While that is technically true, it doesn't account for the subtle ways Biblical interpretation mimics scientific analysis. This video discusses how the transition from geocentrism to heliocentrism influenced our understanding of the Bible and Dr. Gentry presents his belief that Biblical interpretation functions like Thomas Kuhn's models of science.
Easing the tension between science and Christianity?
Our society gives too much attention to the tension between science and Christian faith; this video is about solutions. We advocate for a complementary relationship where science can inform faith and faith can inform science and both can thrive because of, not despite, each other. At Disciple Science we believe that integrating science and Christian faith can inspire the fullest knowledge of God.
Why are we so confident about heliocentrism?
500 years ago almost everyone was certain that the earth was at the center of our solar system (geocentrism) but now we are certain that it is not (heliocentrism). This podcast/vlog discusses that transition to provide context to the bigger debate about how to read the Bible. In a later episode we will cover how these scientific findings were received by readers of the Bible and why they are so frequently mentioned when we discuss Biblical interpretation.
Should science influence Biblical interpretation?
We have debated how to best read and interpret scripture for as long as the scriptures have existed.  In the past four centuries, a large part of that debate has centered around the role that science could or should play in helping us understand the Bible.   This video tells the story of Nicholas Copernicus and Galileo  and  how the development of the heliocentric model of the solar system  not only corrected our celestial geography but also our approach to Biblical interpretation. This ordeal  created some upheaval  but it ultimately helped us  better interpret the Bible, and therefore produced a better understanding of God.
The Gospel and the Environment
As human activity continues to change the climate, drive mass extinctions, and degrade soil, water and air, human activity is needed to reduce and reverse these impacts. Christians could and should be deeply interested in mobilizing to help. But Christianity has a tense relationship with the environmental movement which has led some to question whether Christians should be involved in environmental stewardship at all. This video explores the Christian Gospel and considers if it informs environmental stewardship.
Christianity & Evolution
Evolution has been a topic of debate since long before Charles Darwin. This video introduces the issue and gives us a framework for how to move forward on our search for understanding of when and how God created.

The Two Books of God
Can you know an artist through their art? Scripture tells us that we can know the creator through creation. Hear more about the two books of God and consider what role science and nature can play in your journey of faith and your understanding of God.

Is there tension between science and Christian faith?
Before we dig into  science, scripture, history and philosophy, we need to address the nature of the relationship.  Science approaches the world seeking cause and effect; religious traditions are a search for meaning.  W
hat is behind the tension between science and Christian faith?   Can they coexist?
